What is a lap splice in steel bars and why is it required?

What will be an ideal response?

Because of transportation limitations, reinforcing steel bars are available in finite lengths. Because continuity of bars is required, the individual bars are lap spliced, which is similar to splicing paper tapes with a glue. In the case of the bars, concrete functions as the glue so that stress from one bar is transferred to the spliced bar through concrete.
