Describe a learning experience that can introduce students to irrational numbers

What will be an ideal response?

Students can be given multilink cubes and asked to create larger cubes with certain requested volumes, all perfect cube numbers, such as 125. Through experimentation, they will determine the length of the sides of the cube to be five units. They will then be told that 5 is what is called the "cube root" of 125, and they will be asked for ideas why it has this name. This will help them make the connection between squaring numbers and taking the square root, and cubing numbers and taking the cube root.
