This trematode infection of the urinary bladder of an Egyptian man was caused by
A. Schistosoma mansoni
B. Schistosoma japonicum
C. Schistosoma haematobium
D. Taenia saginata
E. Ascaris lumbricoides
C
Schistosoma haematobium, a trematode endemic to Northern Africa, invades through the skin and enters the venous plexus of the urinary bladder, where it lays eggs. Irritation of the tissues by calcified eggs causes chronic inflammation with foreign body giant cells, as seen in Figure 54.01 . S. mansoni and S. japonicum affect the gastrointestinal tract and the liver. Taenia and Ascaris are not trematodes, and furthermore these worms do not infect the urinary bladder.
