The essential factor of compassion fatigue is empathy or a central focus and feeling with and in the client’s world. Empathetic individuals may absorb the traumatic stress of those they help. As a result, they experience symptoms similar to their clients such as difficulty sleeping, difficulty concentrating, social withdrawal, poor judgment, and addictive behavior. It is referred to as “the pain of helping,” which is a psychological injury of helping professionals. The strategies for personal self-care focus on promoting one’s well-being. Examples of personal care strategies include (1) understanding disrupted schemas; (2) maintaining an appropriate work-life balance; (3) undertaking personal psychotherapy; (4) identifying healing activities, for example, yoga and meditation; and (5) attending to spiritual needs. Examples of professional care include (1) consulting with experienced senior colleagues about case management; (2) developing and maintaining professional networks; (3) having a realistic tolerance of failure; and (4) setting work and personal goals.
