What caused urban sprawl to occur around so many U.S. cities during the past five decades or so, and how can smart growth policies be useful in slowing it down in future years?
What will be an ideal response?
The increasing use of automobiles and U.S. government policies that encouraged home ownership encouraged people to move to the suburbs where they could buy relatively inexpensive housing. Smart growth policies encourage people to live in dense mixed-use neighborhoods. This allows people to live near where they work, shop, and play, and to walk or use public transportation.
