What should be included in the educational plans for A.P. and her parents?
What will be an ideal response?
• It will be important to teach A.P.'s parents how to apply the lice cream rinse, towel dry her hair,
and use a very fine-toothed comb to remove the nits or bugs from the hair shaft. (A basin of water
or isopropyl alcohol should be kept to clean the comb several times during removal of the nits.)
Nits adhere to the hair shaft and must be pulled off. If the parent is unable to pull nits off the hair
shaft, the hair should be cut just below the level of the nit. Teach A.P. and her parents to use the
pediculicide for the time specified on the directions, using a second bottle if the hair is long. The
hair should be checked every 2 or 3 days, removing any nits or lice that are seen. The treatment
will need to be repeated in 7 to 10 days (the eggs hatch in 7 to 10 days).
• It will be important that all family members be checked and evaluated for head lice.
• Teach the family about thoroughly washing and cleaning bedding and clothing (change daily,
launder in hot water with detergent, and dry for at least 20 minutes in a hot dryer) and personal
hygiene items (clean with hot soapy water or alcohol). Items that cannot be cleaned in this
manner (toys or other personal items) should be placed in a sealed plastic bag for at least 2 weeks.
Vacuum the floor and furniture, especially areas where the infested person sat. Additional
education should be provided regarding the importance of hygiene in preventing and eradicating
head lice.
