Explain why radiation affects cancerous cells to a greater degree than noncancerous cells

Radiation causes chromosomal damage, which harms rapidly dividing cells (i.e., the cancerous cells) more than "normal" body cells. Chromosomal breakage results in problems during division in the cancer cells, and therefore mitosis cannot proceed normally. Unfortunately, the damage is not limited just to cancerous cells, but causes damage to other rapidly dividing cells, such as those of the skin, the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, and tissues that produce blood cells.
