Group leaders may choose to provide within-session processing in three different ways. Identify the three ways and provide examples of the advantages and disadvantages of using each method.
What will be an ideal response?
The answer will identify pausing the action, scheduling at the sessions end, and using a combination of both and provide an example of how each is used. The benefits of each are that pausing the action is an immediate opportunity to focus on learning and provides insight that is best right-then-and-there. The benefit of scheduling for the end of session is that the activity itself summarizes and integrates meaning of the entire session. The mixed method provides the benefits from both methods when the leader decides this is in the best interest of the group. Disadvantages for immediate processing include the disruption to the experience; mismanagement of the timing could be a disadvantage for the end of session method; and a disadvantage to the mixed method is lack of proportionate attention to direct experience versus the processing. Each of these advantages and disadvantages should be clarified by elaborating with examples either from the chapter or from the student’s own description.
