Compare and contrast Western and Eastern views of aging and older adults.

What will be an ideal response?

Western culture is oriented toward individualism, independent, self-reliance, and work. It may be difficult for older adults because they begin to lose some of their independence, self-reliance, and ability to work. Families try to strike a balance between loyalty to one’s nuclear family and to one’s aging parents. Western culture promotes “gaining gracefully” or not aging at all. Youth is revered and signs of aging are viewed with distaste. In Eastern cultures, aging has a more positive meaning. Older age means maturity, is considered socially valuable, and an older person is seen to gain a transcendental understanding. Children honor their parents and care for aging parents.
