Describe the technique of measuring acute and convalescent titers in an infection and
how the titers can be used to make a diagnosis.
What will be an ideal response
A serum specimen should be collected and preserved as soon as possible during the acute, symptomatic portion of
an illness. At this point in the illness, the immune system is just beginning its response. Two to four weeks later,
during the convalescent period, a second serum specimen should be collected. Both specimens should be tested and
titered simultaneously. If the titer of the convalescent specimen is fourfold or higher as compared with the acute
specimen, this is considered diagnostic for the infection in question.
