Explain how regenerative brakes work.

What will be an ideal response?

In a regenerative braking system, the rotor of the generator is turned by the vehicle’s wheels as the vehicle is slowing down. The activation of the generator applies resistance to the drivetrain causing the wheels to slow down. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is changed to electrical energy until the vehicle is stopped. At that point there is no kinetic energy to use. The DC electricity generated during braking is sent through an inverter where it is changed into AC voltage, regulated, and converted back to DC so it can be stored in the vehicle’s battery pack.
