Ans: Competence is a core value with standards describing the social worker’s role and responsibilities in a helping relationship. Responsibilities to the individual(s), colleagues, agency, and society include being knowledgeable in a given practice area. An ethical dilemma may occur if the social worker, as a co-facilitator, is aware that the primary facilitator is not skilled or knowledgeable about group work process or the primary focus, such as eating disorders. It would be incumbent upon the social worker to discuss with the primary facilitator her concerns on behalf of the group and the agency. Perhaps that facilitator needs specific training and oversight before taking on this type of group role. The next step would be to involve the social worker’s supervisors for input and direction.
