International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modifications is a system of standardized codes to classify mortality and morbidity. ICD--9--CM diagnoses codes are required on insurance claims to justify the need for the procedure or service performed. ICD --9--CM is also used to track and create statistics about causes of death.
