A client who has terminal lung cancer asks the nurse, "Have you ever seen anyone recover from this type of cancer?" Which of these responses should the nurse make?

a. "No, but I have seen many clients improve dramatically."
b. "You should focus on improving your health, not curing it."
c. "Never."
d. "Yes, I have."

A
Surgery is the primary treatment for each of these cancers. For laryngeal cancer, the larynx is removed (laryngectomy) and a permanent tracheostomy is created; depending on the extent of cancer, a simple or radical neck dissection may also be performed. Radiation may be used as a primary treatment or as an adjunct to surgery. For lung cancer, the tumor and surrounding lung tissue are removed; the location and stage of cancer determine whether pneumonectomy (removal of entire lung), lobectomy (removal of a lung lobe), or segmental resection (removal of a lung segment) is performed. Radiation and chemotherapy are used in conjunction with surgery or in situations where the tumor is inoperable.
