There are a large number of structures involved in normal vision; damage to nearly any one of them may result in partial or complete blindness. Starting from the beginning, there must be healthy cornea, lens, retina (including rods and three types of cones, bipolar and ganglion cells, horizontal and amacrine cells), normal pressure in the eye chambers, intact optic nerve, and the remainder of the visual pathway through the visual cortex.
