What made the events of World War I a world war as opposed to a pan-European conflict?
What will be an ideal response?
The involvement of the Ottoman Empire is the main factor that spread war across the boundaries of Europe; however, the involvement of the United States after April 1917 also makes it even more of an international conflict. While the majority of the fighting was carried out in the European arena, and the European population suffered the most, its effects were felt throughout the world. Also, England's status as the empire on which the sun never set involved other members of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand. Eventually, twenty-four states were drawn in on the Allied side, including the African Republic of Liberia; China, Japan, and Siam (Thailand) in Asia; Brazil, Cuba, Guatemala, and Honduras in South and Central America; and eventually the United States.
