A successful literacy curriculum includes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, higher-order thinking and deep understanding, independent reader and reader response, comprehension strategies, and scaffolding students’ comprehension. Teachers must build connections amongst all these components and make appropriate instructional decisions for the learners with whom they are working. Motivation is key to all the rest. Unless students what to read deeply and critically instruction will take them only so far. It is desire the pushes all reader to tackle difficult text and difficult tasks.
