Describe the difference between a short circuit and an open circuit.

A short circuit is an alternate path of very low resistance in a circuit. For example, if the two wires leading to a lamp come in contact with each other, it forms a path of practically zero resistance. This causes a large current in the wires, and the wires will overheat. An open circuit occurs when some part of a circuit is either open, such as a switch, or malfunctioning, such as a burned-out fuse or a broken wire. There is no current anywhere in the circuit.
