Consider the five primary senses. Describe each and how it develops over time. Consider that children are adapting to their world with each day they are in it. Do you think these patterns of development make sense (e.g., visual is quite immature at birth whereas touch is mature—does this make sense when you think about what an infant needs to do?)?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Touch, smell, and taste are relatively mature at birth. Hearing is quite good, although it improves over the first year in threshold. Vision is quite poor in some regards (acuity) and good in others (constancy). Visual development occurs rapidly over the first year. The latter question requires critical thinking about the patterns just explained. Students may talk about, for example, the fat infants need to rely on reflexes to eat, so touch needs to be well functioning. They are cared for and have never had sight before birth, so it could be quite overwhelming to see everything at once.
