Presentational rituals encompass “acts through which the individual makes specific attestations to recipients concerning how he regards them and how he will treat them in the on-coming interaction” (ibid.: 71). For much of interaction is guided by an attempt to avoid embarrassment and the discrediting of one another’s self as an object worthy of receiving deference.
