A dictionary attack takes advantage of people’s tendency to select simple
words as their passwords. This type of attack uses the words in a dictionary
list (found on most computers) to try each word until the password is found.
The ease and availability of this type of attack make it more critical than ever
for users to select strong passwords, keep them secret, and change them
periodically. A strong password is at least eight characters long, contains
a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters
(!@#$%^&*).
