Identify and discuss the components of effective social and emotional instruction.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Response should include
• The most efficient and effective means to achieve positive social and emotional instructional outcomes is through teacher-directed instruction. Effective social and emotional instruction has several components that contribute to positive outcomes.
o The lessons focus on teaching behaviors rather than characteristics. Some curricula emphasize the importance of constructs such as honesty, respect, kindness, or fairness. Just discussing these constructs does not teach students how to show honest, respectful, kind or fair behavior. Successful lessons have specific examples and nonexamples of each of the constructs.
o The teacher instructs using the teacher-directed instruction framework. Teachers identify lesson objectives, model the behaviors, and provide guided and independent practice through role-playing. Practicing skills in several different settings is especially important to ensure that the skills are transferred to each setting where the skill is needed. Other important components of teacher-directed instruction include correcting errors and providing feedback.
o The skills and strategies are taught as part of a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate curriculum across the school, if possible, so that it creates a common language with consistent expectations for all students, teachers, administrators, and other school adults. Having a common language is a way of creating consistent expectations and ways to teach and reinforce those expectations across the school. All students learn the same skills at approximately the same time so that expectations are consistent across grade levels. The lessons and activities build upon previously taught concepts so that a comprehensive and integrated curriculum is used.
