Explain the two components of the conscience and its relationship to the autonomic nervous system.

What will be an ideal response?

There are two components to conscience: the rational and the emotional. A large part of successful prosocial socialization (i.e., acquiring a conscience) concerns individuals’ relative sensitivity to reward and punishment as they contemplate others’ approval or disapproval of their behavior. We must all learn cognitively what is expected of us (what is right and what is wrong), but how well lessons are learned is more a function of how the lessons engage the brain’s emotional centers than how they engage rational reflection. Differences in the emotional component of conscience reflect variation in autonomic nervous system arousal patterns.
