How are stereotyping and prejudice related? Name three ways they are perpetuated.
What will be an ideal response?
- Prejudice is often the result of stereotyping. When we place someone into an inflexible, all-encompassing category, a stereotype, we may use that placement to prejudge them based upon insufficient information. When your stereotypes are inaccurate, they may result in harmful prejudices.
- Common ways in which stereotypes are perpetuated:
* Through jokes
* Using labels
* Rigid descriptions
* Making assumptions
* Relying on "spokesperson syndrome." (i.e. asking a Hispanic friend to explain how Hispanic people feel about a certain topic in general)
