Do you think that periodontal diseases will ever be treated exclusively with chemotherapeutics and not surgery?
What will be an ideal response?
Inflammatory periodontal diseases are infectious diseases; selective diseases are currently treated with adjunctive antibiotics/antimicrobials. Surgical procedures are needed to gain access to the underlying bone where destruction and damage occurred. Surgery is needed to correct the bone destruction. More research is needed to determine the ultimate use of antibiotics and the severity of the disease. Genetics is also implicated in the susceptibility to the disease.
