Explain the idea of attention as an information filter. Give an example from your own life of how attention can act like a filter.
What will be an ideal response?
Student examples will vary. A sample answer follows.
Many researchers believe that attention is a cognitive process that filters out information. We have hundreds of stimuli around us most of the time, but through attention, we can focus on what matters to us and ignore or discard the rest.
My attention acted like a filter when I had to take an important test in high school. When I was nearly done, I noticed how quiet the room was. I looked up and realized that the room was empty except for the teacher and me. Because I was so focused on the exam, I did not notice the new stimuli all around me--the bell ringing, students getting up from their seats and talking, and nearly everyone leaving the room. My attention filtered out unimportant stimuli and helped me to pass the test.
