How did slaves attempt to maintain their own culture and gain some control within the limits of slavery?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
The Stono Rebellion, slave uprising in South Carolina where a group of slaves armed themselves and raided 6 plantations, killing more than 20 whites. There was the adaptation of the "task system" where slaves were given a task and once they completed it, they could do whatever they pleased for the rest of the day. 18th century slaves valued family ties, so they named their children after ancestors and slaves on the same ship called each other "brother" and or "sister", as well as in the slaves' new working place. In addition, they gave children African names, grew crops they had known in Africa (yams & okra), constructed huts with mud walls and thatched roofs, created musical instruments, held dances, and observed funeral rituals.
