Nathan and the other DHS staff believed that for Ayana and other refugees like her, learning English was one of the first and most important priorities. Learning to read, write, and speak English would open vast opportunities for her occupationally, educationally, and socially. Without English literacy, Ayana’s prospects for work and a future were severely limited.
