What advice would you give both your staff and the new nurses to create an environment of friendliness, courtesy and acceptance?
You are a Unit Manager in a Residential Care facility. Six Chinese nurses, enrolled in the Certificate III Aged Care program, will be arriving for a clinical placement. They have been in Melbourne for 3 months. You would like your staff to make them feel welcome and you are using a one-to-one buddy system where a nurse who has worked in the facility for a few years will team up with one of the Chinese nurses.
What will be an ideal response?
a. Staff: Show tolerance and respect, and allow time for the nurses to become accustomed to their new environment and situations. Explain procedures and protocols carefully and provide sufficient time for the new nurses to ask questions. Be supportive, patient and kind—and appreciate diversity and differences in their practice. b. Chinese new nurses: i. Allow yourselves time to become familiar with the climate and environment. ii. Spend time with other students in the accommodation that you share. iii. Make contact with other international nursing students for support and friendship. iv. Attend all meetings at your educational institution (e.g. international support, academic writing, accommodation, health and safety, etc, and at your place of work e.g. policies, standards, protocols, health and safety, etc). v. Ask your ‘buddy' at work any questions about things that concern you vi. Listen and watch carefully how your buddy and others relate to clients and colleagues Try to keep abreast of the studies you are given during the program
