The Internet, including e-mail, is credited with much of the success the ICBL's campaign against landmines. Do you feel the group could have been as successful without these communications tools? How could it have been done without the Internet?
What will be an ideal response?
The ICBL may have been just as successful without the new technologies.
However, the campaign might have taken more time, money, and effort to achieve
the same results. More traditional channels, such as direct mail, lobbying,
advertising, and special events, could have achieved the same results. It is also
important to remember that publicity generated by Princess Diana also enhanced
the campaign. While the Internet may have sped the process along -- especially
in the area of coordinating with other like-minded groups -- its use was not
absolutely essential to the campaign's success.
