Discuss the structural/functional theory of stratification. How does conflict/critical theory agree or disagree with this theory?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should include a description of each theory. Structural/functionaltheory of stratification suggests that stratification is needed to ensure that people are motivated to occupy less pleasant positions and to ensure that people with the right abilities and talents end up in the right positions. This assumes that higher-level occupations are more important to society than lower-level occupations. It also assumes that people are motivated by large amounts of money as the only reason to work at a job. Conflict/critical theories of stratification suggest that social structures promote inequality. These theories are critical of structural/functional theories and ridicule the idea that higher level positions are more important. Conflict theorists also criticize the idea that large differences in pay are necessary to motivate those who want high prestige jobs or jobs that are meaningful to them.
