A respiratory rate of more than 20 breaths per minute in an adult is called

a. apneustic respirations. c. tachypnea.
b. hyperpnea. d. eupnea.

C
In the normal resting adult, the respiratory rate is 12 to 20 breaths per minute. More than 20 breaths per minute is termed tachypnea. Apneustic respirations are respirations characterized by a prolonged inspiratory phase followed by expiration apnea. The rate of apneustic breathing is about 1.5 cycles per minute. Injury to the upper portion of the pons can cause this abnormality. Hyperpnea is a breath that is greater in volume than the resting tidal volume. The respiratory rate and the pattern is even. This occurs during the warm-up and cool-down periods of exercise. The deep breath is drawn to meet the increased metabolic needs of the body. Eupnea is the term used for normal breathing or a respiratory rate of 12 to 20 breaths per minute.
