Trace minerals often compete with each other for absorption in the GI tract. Some trace minerals, such as iron, copper, and zinc, are absorbed in their ionic state, have the same ionic charge 1+22, and use the same protein carriers during absorption. Too much of one of these minerals, such as iron, Fe+2, can cause a decrease in the absorption and metabolism of another, for example, copper, Cu+2, leading to an imbalance.2 Thus, bioavailability of each mineral depends on the amount of both minerals in the GI tract at the time of absorption. To increase mineral bioavailability, persons should not take single-mineral supplements.
