Why do many marine pollution experts consider oil to be among the least damaging pollutants introduced into the ocean?
What will be an ideal response?
Hydrocarbons are organic substances, so they can be broken down, or biodegraded, by microorganisms. The oil dissipates and breaks down, becoming food for various microbes.
Some natural undersea oil seeps have occurred for millions of years, and the ocean ecosystem seems unaffected—or even enhanced—by them (because oil is a source of energy). Other types of pollutants last far longer and can do much more damage than an oil spill.
