Answer: The overarching term to describe the regulation of the internal environment in animals is called homeostasis. The two structures in homeostasis are the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. This results in homeostasis being controlled by the brain. These two structures control the body's temperature when it comes to mammals. The hypothalamus releases hormones and stops hormones that either release or inhibit hormones that come from the pituitary. Temperature is maintained through external stimuli as well as the external condition of the mammal. Another element that can regulate homeostasis is respiration. This is due to gas exchange and and the regulation of blood pH.
