Discuss the importance of focusing and how you plan to use this skill.

What will be an ideal response?

?Focusing helps to create order in the material your client presents. Particularly for clients whose thinking and presentation are scattered, focusing can help them begin to create some structure in how they contemplate the array of issues in their lives.
?Focusing can help prioritize problems, for example, and this can help both you and your client think more constructively about how to actively approach them in an organized fashion.
?You may choose to have your client be a full participant in this process of focusing.
?You can use a reflective comment to summarize the array of concerns he has enumerated, and then ask him to select which is most important.
?You might say, “Well, you’ve talked about your concerns about work, about your family, and about your relationship with your friend. Which of these is most important right now?”
?This sets the stage for a more focused discussion, but instead of your choosing, the client takes command of the choice process.
