Nursing care of a patient with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) includes monitoring of T lymphocyte counts. Explain why

What will be an ideal response

The primary defect in patients with AIDS is depletion of helper T cells, and therefore the cell-mediated response. This immunodeficiency makes the patient more susceptible to infection and unusual cancers. Thus the lower the count, the more protective precautions need to be taken.
