Consider the section "We Can Live More Simply and Lightly on the Earth." Do you agree that many of the things we now feel are necessities are actually luxuries? Could you do without them, or are they now part of your necessities? How does your worldview affect your sense of what is necessary?
What will be an ideal response?
Most students are likely going to understand the list of "luxuries" (cars, televisions, cell phones, etc.) as truly necessities. The phrase from Gandhi ("The earth provides enough to satisfy every person's need, but not every person's greed.") might prove an interesting foil for discussion. The person should engage the word "enough" in some fashion. If there is no limit to enough then the accumulation of things has no boundaries.
