Silicon diodes have almost totally replaced germanium diodes in electronic applications. Why?

What will be an ideal response?

Although germanium was the first element used in the manufacture of diodes, silicon diodes are easier and cheaper to manufacture, and they can handle more heat. Germanium diodes are still used in some applications, however, where only a small voltage of 0.3 V is needed to turn on the diode, such as in a crystal radio set.
