However, serotonin receptor genes have been linked to anorexia, and patients with anorexia have increased transmitter binding at the 5HT1A receptors and reduced binding at 5HT2A receptors. Since these serotonin receptors are also not in normal proportions in comorbid disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and compulsive behavior, researchers Bailer and Kaye (2010) have hypothesized that patients may restrict food intake to reduce anxiety by reducing activity of the 5HT1A receptor.
