Discuss the role of serotonin in anorexia, in particular the finding that antidepressants that block serotonin reuptake can be effective in preventing anorexic relapse.

What will be an ideal response?

While serotonin levels are low in anorexic patients when engaging in restricted eating, this appears to be due to consuming too little tryptophan, which is needed by the body to produce serotonin, rather than a cause of the disorder. However, serotonin receptor genes have been linked to anorexia, and patients with anorexia have increased transmitter binding at the 5HT1A receptors and reduced binding at 5HT2A receptors. Since these serotonin receptors are also not in normal proportions in comorbid disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and compulsive behavior, researchers Bailer and Kaye (2010) have hypothesized that patients may restrict food intake to reduce anxiety by reducing activity of the 5HT1A receptor.
