Explain the Ohio State and Michigan theories of leadership

What will be an ideal response?

• Many researchers have focused on behaviors when examining the character trait approach to understanding leadership. This approach suggests that effective leadership depends upon how leaders interact with their subordinates.
• Two concepts, consideration for subordinates and initiating structures, guide the behavioral approach to leadership. They evolved from two sets of leadership studies conducted at Ohio State and Michigan in the 1940s-1960s.
• The Ohio State studies concluded that leadership could be examined on the two dimensions of consideration and initiating structure. The researchers found that the most effective leaders were considerate of their subordinates and initiated structure so that employees could meet goals. However, a shortcoming to the study was that it failed to consider the importance of specific situations in the leadership process.
• The Michigan studied two contrasting leadership traits; production centered leaders and employee centered leaders. The Michigan studies found that the most effective leaders were considered to be employee centered. The concern is whether or not the study actually considered broader concepts of leadership.
