Explain Jürgen Habermas’s idea of the ideal speech situation. Why is it difficult to achieve in contemporary society? Provide an example describing a situation where and why you think an ideal speech situation is possible or arguing against this concept.

What will be an ideal response?

• Habermas’s grand theory points out that the lifeworld has been colonized by a system that distorts free and open communication. Power more and more determines what and whose ideas are heard and discussed. In the idea speech situation, speech is not distorted by group or individual power and the better argument wins out.
• Habermas discussed sites of ideal speech taking place on micro levels in the public square such as coffeehouses and other public venues. Others have suggested that chat rooms might hold some possibilities to that end.
• Students should provide an example and give enough details to uphold or critique the possibility of ideal speech.
