In your own words, summarize how males and female differ in their perceptions of social relationships

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should communicate that males and females both need relationships, but they differ in the type of support they seek and the perceived demands of their relationships.

• Females gain more psychological benefits from social relationships that men; they're less likely to experience depression when they have emotionally supportive relationships (but are more susceptible to depression than males when relationships experience difficulties).
• Males are more sensitive to issues of social isolation than social support; they don't need as many relationships as females do, but they need at least one or two friends to hang out with, and they experience more stress as the size of their social networks increase.
