Discuss how U.S. defense spending compares to that of other countries and the historical roots that led to our modern-day situation. Then explore the advantages and disadvantages of this spending policy (in other words, what is sacrificed when money is spent on defense?). Finally, broadly outline the defense approach being taken by President Obama.

What will be an ideal response?

Military spending is one of the largest items in the federal budget and is the largest amount of spending by far of any other developed country. This investment has led the United States to become the world’s superpower, but this spending has come at the expense of domestic programs. President Obama’s plan is to cut military spending and invest in technologies like the drone while increasing foreign aid in order to prevent wars.
