Discuss optimal foraging theory.
What will be an ideal response?
Optimal foraging theory posits that an animal will spend its time maximizing its food gains (energy intake) while avoiding predation. Optimal foraging theory does not maintain that an animal will necessarily take the biggest clam, for example, even if the clam provides the most food. The larger clam has a harder shell, while small or medium clams wouldn't be as hard to open, but more time will be spent in handling each. Ultimately all of these strategies are important if they lead to reproductive success, i.e., fitness.
