What is the extent of cybercrime, and what forms does it take?

What will be an ideal response?

A recent estimate by the U.S. Secret Service put the annual cost of cybercrime in the US at about $666 million. The Computer Security Institute estimates that computer crime cost companies an average of $168,000 each in 2006.

There are many forms of cybercrime. Software piracy, which involves the unauthorized and illegal copying of software programs, is extremely common; the Business Software Alliance reported that 41% of all PC software installed in 2008 was pirated.

Phishing uses official-looking e-mail messages to steal valuable information from victims. One estimate suggests that 3.6 million victims lost $3.2 billion in the U.S. in 2007 due to phishing attacks.

The creation and transmission of destructive computer viruses, spyware, and other malicious forms of computer code is also a form of cybercrime, although it is not committed for financial gain.
