What is the appeal of a national consumption tax to its advocates?

What will be an ideal response?

The burden of the tax is placed on spending rather than on earning money. The consumption tax could encourage saving in the American economy--something which is not occurring at high rates now. The consumption tax ensures that everyone pays some part of the tax burden. It would simplify the tax system, placing the burden of record keeping on businesses rather than the public.
