There could be many reasons why Scardino’s business career has persisted much longer than Fiorino’s,
much personal, and a basis for much speculation. One obvious explanation would be that the strategies
with which she is associated have proved effective, while Fiorina’s (notably HP/Compaq) were more
controversial and problematic. A second, objective reason would be that her early career encountered
failure as well as moderate success, whereas Fiorina’s account of early career suggests continuous
success, hence Scardino learned different things and perhaps developed a more nuanced approach to
strategic decisions. A third reason could be that Fiorina faced much stronger entrenched opposition to her
leadership style and strategies at HP than did Scardino at Pearson.
