Discuss the indications for systemic antibiotic usage in periodontics

What will be an ideal response?

Indications include localized/generalized aggressive periodontitis and necrotizing periodontal diseases. Systemic antibiotics should not be given to patients with any form of gingivitis, except NUG. Antibiotics are primarily indicated for periodontal diseases where there is bacterial invasion directly through the junctional/sulcular epithelium into the underlying gingival connective tissue (lamina propria). This is because scaling and root planing will not be able to reach the bacteria that have invaded into the tissues, thus a systemic antibiotic is necessary to reach this target area.
