A social media profile picture is an important electronic identity marker. People use profile pictures to reflect parts of their identities that they value--one person may choose a picture of herself rock climbing, while another may choose a picture from his wedding day. Choosing a profile picture that supports a cause or expresses solidarity with victims of a tragedy also communicates information about one’s identity. In this case, the person is not only expressing his or her stance on an issue or event, but is also communicating to others that he or she is politically or socially active and aware of current events.
